The Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers (JASNAOE) and the Korean Society for Marine Environmental Engineering (KOSMEE) initiated biannual workshop for marine environments in 2003. The objective of this workshop is to provide a forum for East Asian researchers, engineers, and students to exchange their new ideas and to introduce their latest activities in the field of the marine environmental engineering and management. The first workshop held in Korea in 2003 and the second in 2005, Japan. The committee of the 2005 workshop decided to develop as a research group of marine environments with a name as 'East Asian Network for Marine Environments (EAMEN)', and extend to the workshop for including more attendants from other Asian countries with a new name for the workshop as 'East Asian Workshop for Marine Environments (EAWOMEN). In 2007, the 3rd EAWOMEN was co-organized by EAMEN, Taiwan Society of Ocean Engineering (TSOE), JASNAOE, and KOSMEE as international organizations. The 4th workship was held in Korean Maritime University in 2009, and professors and students from Ocean University of China (OUC) were newly participated.
The 5th EAWOMEN was co-organized by EAMEN, JASNAOE, KOSMEE, TSOE, and OUC and was successfully held in The University of Tokyo(UT), Japan on 6-8th October 2011. In this workshop, about 70 people including 16 participants from Korea, 15 from Taiwan, and 6 from China were participated.
The workshop commenced with the wonderful welcome reception at traditional Japanese Bar, where the participants were delighted to meet together again. In the opening ceremony next morning, Prof. Yusaku Kyozuka on behalf of the EAMEN, Prof. Koji Otsuka from JASNAOE, and Prof. Masahiko Ozaki from UT gave addresses. Total 52 papers were presented including 32 oral presentations and 20 posters. The topics of the presentations included various issues on the marine environments and technology such as tidal energy, wave energy, marine environments of East Asian Nations, marine environmental change caused by climate change, and etc.
The International Organizing Committee was held during the workshop, and the name of the network was decided to change. The new name of the network is 'East Asian Network for Marine Environment and Energy (EAMEN2)' and the new name of the workshop is 'East Asian Workshop for Marine Environment and Energy(EAWOMEN2). Prof. Beom-Soo Hyun from Korea Maritime University was elected the new chairman of the network. IOC of EAMEN2 also decided the 6th workshop will be held in Qingdao, China in 2013.
