Report

Prof. Beom-Soo Hyun

The Korean Society for Marine Environmental Engineering (KOSMEE) and the Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers (JASNAOE, former MEC-SNAJ) initiated biannual workshop for marine environments in 2003. The objective of this workshop is to provide a forum for East Asian researchers, engineers, and students to exchange their new ideas and to introduce their latest activities in the field of the marine environmental engineering and management. The first workshop held in Korean in 2003 and the second in 2005, Japan. The committee of the 2005 workshop decided to develop as a research group of marine environments with a name as "East Asian Network for Marine Environments (EAMEN)", and extend to the workshop for including more attendants from other Asian countries with a new name for the workshop as "East Asian Workshop for Marine Environments (EAWOMEN). In 2007, the 3rd EAWOMEN was co-organized by EAMEN, Taiwan Society of Ocean Engineering (TSOE), JASNAOE, and KOSMEE as international organizations. The Department of Hydraulic and Ocean Engineering, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) was the major local organization.

The 4th EAWOMEN was co-organized by EAMEN, KOSMEE, JASNAOE and TSOE and was successfully held in Korean Maritime University (KMU), Republic of Korea on 5-7th November 2009. KMU has greatly contributed to build a strong seafaring nation specialized in maritime technology and ocean research since 1945. In this workshop, about 70 people including 13 participants from Japan and 14 from Taiwan were participated. Especially 5 professors and students from Ocean University of China participated in the workshop this year.

The first day of workshop commenced with opening ceremony chaired by Prof. Beom-soo Hyun, KMU and Prof. Yusaku Kyozuka on behalf of the EAMEN, Dr. Chang-Gu Kang from KOSMEE and Dr. Keo Don Oh, president of KMU gave addresses. Total 46 papers were presented including 25 oral presentations and 21 posters. The topics of the presentations included various issues on the marine environments and technology such as tidal energy, wave energy, marine environments of East Asian Nations, marine environmental change caused by climate change, and etc.

After workshop, all participants had a Busan city tour. Busan Metropolitan City is the largest port city in South Korea and the fifth largest port in the world. Participants boarded the ship at Basan harbor and watched beautiful tourist attractions around Busan. They went to the Jagalchi Market which is an area of narrow street stalls and is well known for its fish market. And they also visited Gukje Market which has long been a marketplace for foreigners as well as for Korean over 520 years. The market has many kinds of goods so all visitors had a good time. The participants were very impressive for the energy and the beautiful sight of the Busan.

Based upon the decision of the committee of EAWOMEN, the 5th EAWOMEN will be held in Japan in 2011.
